If there is anyone who would like to beta for me I think I'd love you forever!
Nino sat on the subway with his DS situated in his lap as normal. In fact everything about this morning had been normal. Starting with the usual hitting of the snooze button until he threatened to be late, down to the search for his guitar that he usually left lying around the apartment in the last room he’d been in the night before. The problem was at seven in the morning the details of the night before were usually quite hazy. It wasn’t just normal anymore, it was routine. It was a chaotic routine, but a routine all the same. The Tokyo landscape flew by through the subway windows but it didn’t faze him at all. Just as he was unfazed by the man sitting next to him that was running his hand up and down Nino’s thigh.
The subway came to a stop and he watched the array of people boarding and unloading the train. He looked down at his pocket where his cell phone was currently buzzing signifying a text that had to either be from his roommate Aiba or the owner of the music store he worked at. Quickly checking his watch and realizing he was on time today that left Aiba, who was easily ignored when he was not bouncing in front of your face.
With a sigh, Nino looked up to find himself face to crotch with an unknown man. His eyes slowly traveled up from the dark jeans, past the solid green t-shirt up to the dazed face framed with short brown hair. Nino couldn’t stop the small chuckle that escaped his lips. As the man turned to look at him curiously, Nino again couldn’t stop himself from straining to see if there was anything suspicious about the guy’s eyes. People in Tokyo, or Japan for that matter, never looked that serene.
Though upon meeting the man’s eyes he felt a blush spreading across his face and down his neck because he realized it was obvious what he was doing.
“I’m not on anything.” The other man didn’t sound offended but maybe a little surprised, Nino thought.
“I didn’t say anything,” Nino replied, a defensive edge colouring his tone.
The other man gave him a look, or at least Nino took it as one as it was really hard to tell with the man’s lack of facial expressions. Nino wondered if his face even changed during sex but swatted it away quickly with a blush. With a slight scowl, he flicked his DS back on and didn’t look back up until the subway reached his stop. He didn’t want to chance anymore eye contact with the guy so he slung his guitar over his shoulder and slid easily past him. He allowed himself one glance back and regretted it instantly. The man was sitting in Nino’s former seat with his backpack comfortably on his lap staring at Nino with an unblinking stare that made Nino squirm.
He shuddered a little before he put in his earphones to block out not only the sounds of the city now, but the picture of that unnerving stare. The man wasn’t exactly creepy, he was actually a little good-looking, but he had talked to Nino and people just didn’t talk to people on subways, or at least not to him.
Walking out of the subway terminal and into the bright sunshine, Nino squinted a little trying to adjust to the sudden blinding light. With a quick glance at his watch, he realized he had time to take the long way to work and not through the back alleys as usual. He smiled a small smile enjoying the bit of rare time to himself.
Suddenly remembering the text message from the train, he pulled out his piece of junk cell phone and read it.
Thanks for the wakeup call. If I’m late I’m not talking to you anymore.
Ah, that would explain why he had time to enjoy the scenery. It was amazing how much time he saved when he didn’t have to drag a certain tall, brunette child out of bed and check up on him every few minutes to make sure he wasn’t taking a quick nap in the shower or in the chair at the breakfast table.
Is that a promise?
He smirked at his phone before slipping it back into his pocket with new determination to enjoy the long-lost scenery.
Nino passed an elementary school where kids were playing with one another in their plaid school uniforms. They looked so innocent and carefree and he wished he could go back in that stage of his life and redo it properly. Nino had always been a bit of a loner and even more of a people pleaser. Nino had began to realize it pleased people when he stayed to himself so he’d set up a lifestyle that had lasted his entire twenty- six years. He hadn’t noticed he’d stopped to watch until he noticed a few kids staring back at him curiously. With a small blush and a quick smile he picked up the pace with the realization that if he kept up at this pace he would be late.
He passed an elderly couple sitting in the park and a few street vendors selling all sorts of crazy stuff. If he’d had more time he would have stopped and inspected the items a little closer. Including the toy monkey that seemed to spring to life when a potential customer walked by, inviting them to the small booth. Aiba and Jun had relentlessly complained about him being stingy ever since he’d known them and he had to admit, grudgingly of course, that they might be right. He was a hell of a window shopper though.
When he reached the small shop, he pushed through the doors and looked at the familiar rows of CDs and records. The shop was small so that was just about everything they sold along with a single row of earphones and a couple new gadgets.
“On time, I’d love to say as usual but I’d be lying,” was the greeting that came from the diva behind the counter.
“Hi Jun,” he frowned in response, before pulling his guitar off his shoulder and setting it carefully against the counter.
One of the perks of working here was with the lack of customers and his uncaring boss he was able to play his guitar during the quiet periods. His boss had practically given up on the place and Nino suspected it wouldn’t be around much longer but he still enjoyed it.
“Aiba’s mad,” Jun smirked, clearly enjoying the prospect of Aiba being mad at anyone.
“Let him be,” Nino shrugged, checking the store for customers before picking up his guitar and strumming a few warm-up chords. “He’s a twenty-seven year old man; I think it’s about time he learned to wake up on his own.”
Jun laughed at that, “Did you hear about Aiba’s latest flirt?”
Nino shook his head and looked at Jun curiously. Jun, Aiba and him were all close but he was usually the first one Aiba talked to about anything.
“His name is Sakurai Sho and he’s a bartender at some place in downtown Tokyo. Aiba’s got it bad. I feel bad for the man; there is no greater horror then Aiba in love.” Jun snickered, flicking the page of his fashion magazine.
Nino looked at Jun, admittedly a little shell-shocked, “Wait, when did he meet the guy?”
He was starting to feel a little bit offended, had he been seeing this guy without even a word to his best friend?
“Last night,” Jun gave him a knowing look before turning back to his magazine.
Aiba did have a bit of a reputation for falling for guys a little too fast, his heart usually outweighing his head. Though with Aiba that was usually the case.
That’s how he’d ended up working at a small pet shop on the outskirts of Tokyo. It wasn’t amazing pay, hence the roommate, and it was drastically out of his way but the elderly couple that owned it were admittedly quite sweet.
They gave Aiba time off when he wanted it and they treated him like a son, seeing as theirs was a Tokyo businessman with barely anytime for them. Aiba was an annoyingly loveable man which is why they hired him as soon as he introduced himself. He hadn’t even been meaning to get a job, he’d seen a small puppy in the window and had side-stepped into the store to get a better look, ironically on the way to a job interview. Aiba had always worked like that, Nino mused.
“Figures, that man couldn’t possibly live without us,” Nino shook his head, but a fond smile graced his features, “So I guess this means we have to go check the guy out?”
“Read my mind,” Jun chuckled.
Aiba’s dating past had been, to say the least, an interesting one. Takuya, the one with the kinky fetishes stood out in his mind but he was only one in a long list of strange man. If there was a guy with some kind of kinky or criminal quality Aiba had been there and done that. Which made it understandable that Nino and Jun should check him out as soon as possible before they ended up in the interview room at the police station... again.
The day went by uneventful with few sales; it had been a normal day of course. He ended up at home but not before arranging a time to meet with Jun to go to the bar later that week. Aiba had bounded down the stairs to greet him and Nino laughed out loud at how quickly Aiba forgave him. They had proceeded to enjoy a chaotically routine night of dinner, board games and drama specials.
Though, late that night something broke him out of his rut. The last thing he saw that night was the kind of good-looking guy staring at him from his seat on the train.
